Honduras wraps up voting for general election

(MENAFN) Polling stations across Honduras closed on Sunday as the country completed voting in a high-stakes general election to select its next president and a wide slate of public officials. Early results are expected to be announced within hours, according to reports.

Balloting officially concluded at 5 p.m. local time (2300GMT), after which election workers began counting votes cast by more than 6.5 million eligible citizens. Voters were tasked with choosing 298 municipal mayors, 128 members of Congress, and 20 delegates to the Central American Parliament.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) announced that preliminary figures would be made public Sunday night. Earlier in the day, CNE President Ana Paola Hall wrote on the social media platform X that authorities had confirmed the participation of 1,495,865 voters by midday.

Rixi Moncada, the ruling party’s presidential contender, proclaimed victory even before tallying was underway, sharing her reaction online. “The refoundation of Honduras is moving forward. We have reports from across the country, and they are excellent. We are winning the election. We must continue in peace, with dedication and love for our cause and our people,” she wrote.

Nasry Asfura, the conservative National Party candidate who has publicly received backing from US President Donald Trump, also voiced optimism about the electoral process. “We have fulfilled our duty and our right to defend our democracy with love and commitment. Honduras, we are going to be okay!” he said.

While reports did not indicate widespread unrest, a civic monitoring organization recorded 4,427 irregularities ranging from damaged voting materials to missing ballots and technical difficulties.
